What are my options to play

There are many opportunities for people who have a disability to get involved in archery. The best places to get started are at an archery have a go session or on a beginners course where the coaches will be able to help with any queries you may have.

There are four different forms of archery – Target, Field, Clout and Flight

Target archery is the current Olympic form of the sport, which takes place on flat terrain and consists of shooting a set number of arrows

Field archery – takes place on a course of targets set out in rough country usually woodland.

Shooting distances are usually unmarked so the archers rely on judgement and instinct.

Clout archery - is very similar to target with the exception that the archer attempts to drop arrows at a long range (this is 180 yards for men and 140 for women).

Flight archery a form of archery that consists of shooting arrows for the greatest distance with no target.

Target archery is the most common form of archery undetaken by clubs. Archery is one of the few sports that is enjoyed with very few adaptations required for people with a disability.

What equipment do I need?

When attending a beginner’s session the equipment will be provided by the club. The coaches will be able to help with any queries you may have and be able to suggest places to purchase your own equipment if you choose to do so.

Before attending your first beginner’s session, speak to the club about your needs so they can cater for you.

What will it cost me?

When joining an archery club new members pay an annual subscription, which can vary from club to club and also will vary with equipment.

The subscription is paid to the club, county and regional associations, and a portion to Archery GB for the affiliation fee.

The cost for the basic equipment (bows, arrows, arm guard, finger tab, quiver etc.) can range from £100-£300 approximately.

The cost of a beginner’s course can vary club to club.
