LimbPower is proud to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and European Limb Loss Day on Tuesday 3rd December, aligning with the theme "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." This theme underscores the vital role that persons with disabilities, especially amputees and individuals with limb differences, play in fostering a more inclusive and sustainable world. LimbPower is dedicated to achieving these goals through dedicated pathways, initiatives and programmes.
Our Commitment:
Promoting Leadership: At LimbPower, we empower individuals with limb impairments to take on leadership roles. Our CEO actively engages with government officials and sits on several committees, ensuring the voices of disabled people are heard at a strategic level. 50% of our board members are amputees and individuals with differences, through this we set a powerful example of inclusive leadership.
Ensuring Inclusion: We focus on inclusion in physical activity and sport by highlighting existing opportunities and pathways and creating new opportunities. LimbPower informed the Cabinet Office regarding physical activity during the update of the Government's Disability Action Plan. We also meet regularly with Sport England and leading disability charities to ensure the inclusion of disabled people in movement, physical activity and sport. Our staff composition reflects this commitment, with 71.429% having lived experiences of limb differences, including amputees, individuals with limb differences, and parents of children with limb differences. We also actively promote the employment of disabled people in the sports, healthcare, and charity sectors.
Increasing Participation: We enhance the involvement of persons with disabilities through communication and engagement pathways, bridging the gap from being discharged from the Limb Centre to engaging in movement, physical activity and sport, through volunteer programmes, community participation, advisory committees, training and development, and collaborative projects. Most of our volunteers are limb different, highlighting our dedication to community involvement and representation.
Raising Awareness: LimbPower spreads knowledge about the rights and capabilities of persons with disabilities through campaigns, workshops, guides, and toolkits designed to challenge and change perceptions. We also conduct research and gather insights to better understand and address the needs of our community.
Celebrating Achievements: We recognise and honour the accomplishments of individuals with limb impairments through awareness campaigns, LimbPower Awards, showcasing their successes in sports and arts, and through empowering case studies shared on traditional and social media, thereby inspiring others and raising awareness about their potential.
As we celebrate these important days, LimbPower remains committed to creating a society where everyone, regardless of ability, can contribute and thrive. We invite the community to support and amplify our efforts to make a lasting impact.
