LimbPower has been developing an amputee and limb difference specific BMI calculator to help YOU, people with an amputation or limb difference calculate YOUR body mass index (BMI) in a more usable way. This is an amazing step forward in making it possible for people with limb differences to monitor changes in their body composition and consider when they need additional support.

The BMI is a simple ratio measurement based on height and weight, which is used in adult men and women without disabilities to help identify if their weight is in a healthy category.

For people with an amputation or limb difference, the standard BMI calculation does not apply, as the limb difference or absent limb/s are not accounted for.

That's what makes this so fantastic, LimbPower has designed this BMI calculator specifically for amputees and people with limb differences, it will help community members get quicker, easier and more applicable BMI scores. This will allow you to better understand your health status and enable you to manage your weight and prosthetic fit.

LimbPower has tested the calculator on individuals with limb loss and will continue to test it to improve its applicability.

Notes

Precisely measuring "full stature" height can pose a challenge for individuals with bilateral lower-limb amputation (especially those who have asked to be taller, Wink)) or those with a congenital limb difference.

If relevant you can:

• Use your wingspan (measurement from the tip of the left middle finger to the tip of the right middle finger when raised parallel to the ground at shoulder height at a 90-degree angle) which is usually close to your adult "full stature" height.
• Use your pre-operation height
• Or refer to your Rehabilitation Consultant who may be able to provide information on an accurate height measurement.

a. LimbPower advises that those who have a history of eating disorder/s , weight obsession/s or related disorders do not use this calculator unless under medical supervision to do so.
b. It is worth noting that we are all different so the calculations are affected by the length of your residual limb/s.
c. Please note that the BMI calculator cannot account for muscle mass or bone density and is not a direct measure of your body tissue composition.
