Advisory Panel

LimbPower’s Sport & Exercise Advisory Panel consists of healthcare professionals and sports professionals - leaders in their field of work, who can offer non-binding strategic advice to the LimbPower Staff and Board of Trustees, to further the goals and objectives of LimbPower.

Our panel members are professionals, who bring unique knowledge and skills, which complement the knowledge and skills of the LimbPower team, in order to more effectively support amputees and the ambulant disabled as they engage with physical activity sport and the arts at all levels - grassroots to elite performance.

This Panel will also support LimbPower with expert knowledge as we grow into the role of a National Disability Sport Organisation.

Ross Wadey

Ross is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Psychology at St Mary's University, Twickenham. He received his PhD from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2009.

Ross’s research has been at the forefront of advancing knowledge on two complimentary themes:

(a) psycho-social investigation of injury, which provides insights into how to prevent injury occurrence and attain desirable injury rehabilitation outcomes; and

(b) resilience and post-traumatic growth, which explores how to bounce-back and ultimately transform potentially debilitating situations into opportunities for personal growth and subjective well-being.

Siobhan Strike

Dr Siobhan Strike is a senior lecturer in Sports Science at the University of Roehampton.

Siobhan's research includes study into the alterations made in performing movements as a result of altered musculoskeletal biomechanics. She researches the effect of ageing and the influence of physical activity on biomechanics and functional mobility. She also researches the design of protheses for and movement patterns of active lower limb amputees. Siobhan teaches on various courses including anatomy and human movement biomechanics.

Ian Jones

Ian Jones is an HCPC registered prosthetic with over 20 years experience.

Having worked in the NHS for 15 years, he also worked and lead the team at DMRC Headley Court of 6 years. Now working in private practice, Ian specialises in sports and complex trauma prosthetics, and medico legal as an expert witness.

Saeed Zaheed

Professor Saeed Zahedi OBE FREng, RDI is among the leading designers of prosthetics.

Technical Director of Chas A Blatchford & Sons, Fellow of the Royal Academy and Institute of Mechanical Engineers, received a Special Commendation in the Prince Philip Designer prize for 2011. He is this year's recipient of Royal Designer for Industry and for over 10 years has been a visiting Professor at University of Surrey.He and his team were finalists in the 2010 McRoberts award; this led to their Queens Awards for technological achievement. A member of ISO, CEN and IEC Working Groups, Saeed has won several other prizes for scientific papers, including: 5 BLESMA awards, IMechE Special Needs, ISPO Forchheimer as far back in 1989, his PhD work conducted at Strathclyde University.

He is the author and presenter of over 125 papers, books and publications, over 35 patents and plays an active role in American associations. He was responsible for commercialisation of the first Intelligent Prosthesis in the early 90's and currently works with his team on the development of an advanced integrated prosthesis utilising microprocessor control ankle/foot and knee joints for lower limb amputees, aiming as increased efficiency and independent living.

He received BHTA life time achievement award in 2013 and also became Royal Designer for Industry.

Dr Fergus Jepson is leader of the specialist mobility rehabilitation centre at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and 2014's HSJ Awards Clinical Leader of the Year.

Dr Tom Shaw MA MB BChir MRCS MRCGP MFSEM (UK&IR) Dip Sports Med Dip Occ Med

Dr Saw trained at Christ's College and Addenbrooker's Hospital in Cambridge before completing a surgical rotation in Norwich. Following work as a Hip Research Fellow in Cambridge, working with the Football Association and several Premiership Football Clubs, he decided to focus primarily on Sports and Exercise Medicine

He completed a shortened General Practice training and a Diploma in Sports Medicine from the University of Bath. He was appointed as a GP principal and started to work at the Blackberry Clinic in 2005.

Dr Jon Head

John graduated from the London School of Prosthetics (LSP) in 1991, and took up the post of Prosthetist at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool at the beginning of 1992. He became Senior Prosthetist in 1993, and acted as the placement educator for the University of Salford from 1996-1999.

In 1999, John joined the University of Salford as a lecturer, became a senior lecturer in 2008, and programme leader in 2010. He has worked with BAPO for a number of years, both as an Executive Committee member between 2009 and 2012, and more recently as BAPO's representative in Health Education England's AHP advisory group.

As well as holding the Diploma in Prosthetics from LSP, John has an HND in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the City of Westminster College, a 2:1 honours degree in Mathematics and completed my PhD in Myoelectric prostheses in 2013.

Sally Orange

Sally qualified as a Physiotherapist from the University of Nottingham in 2000. She initially worked in the NHS, before becoming a Physiotherapy Officer (Major) in the Reserve Army on a full time basis, whereby she completed an Operational Tour in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan in 2011.

She has worked at several military Primary Care Rehabilitation Facilities and Regional Rehabilitation Units within the MOD and completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2007. She is currently in the process of writing her dissertation in order to upgrade this qualification to MSc level in the near future.

George Glew

George has been an Occupational Therapist since 1998, and has worked in a range of roles beginning in the NHS, then local authority and has just taken up a senior post in a private hospital in London.

He spent nearly 14 years working at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, where for most of that time he was the Senior OT in the Complex Trauma team, treating casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan, a proportion of these being amputees.

He eventually specialised in the treatment of those with upper limb injury or loss. George first came into contact with Limbpower when he began taking injured servicemen to participate in the annual Limbpower amputee games and continues to support the charity both as a volunteer at their events and as a fundraiser, most recently cycling the 2015 Prudential London 100 raising money for the charity.
